CONFIDENTIAL CSV-1
Sony Service Company
National Technical Services Service Bulletin
A Division of Sony Electronics Inc.
Park Ridge, New Jersey 07656 TV Products

Model: KWP-65HD1 No. 444R1
Subject: No Picture, Audio O.K., Front Panel Date: February 29, 2000
Timer/Standby LED Blinks In Groups of 5
Flashes (also see TV service bulletin #435).

Symptom:
(2310) The picture may disappear but the audio remains. The front panel timer/standby LED
blinks in groups of 5 flashes. Turning the set off and then on again may restore the
picture, but the timer/standby LED may continue to blink.

This bulletin revision is being issued to change the procedure for correcting the
symptom. The original procedure called for changing resistors on the CR, CG, and
CB boards. These boards, with the resistors already changed, can now be ordered
from the Sony World Repair Parts Center (WRPC-AS) in Kansas City, Mo. The rest of
the procedure remains the same as it was in the original bulletin.

NOTE: The following procedure only needs to be performed on units with serial
numbers less than 9000460.

Solution: 1- Replace the CR, CG, and CB boards. The original CR, CG, and CB boards
must be returned to: S.A.Y.S. Program
Sony Technology Center
1001 Technology Drive.

2- If the serial number of the set is 9000465 or lower, change the value of PS8001 on
the D-board from 2.0 amps to 3.15 amps (this change is also described in TV service
bulletin # 435. If PS8001 was changed to 3.15 amps during a previous repair it is not
necessary to change it again). See the next page for a diagram showing the
mounting location of PS8001 on the D-board. Sets with serial numbers 9000466 and
higher already have the 3.15 amp fuse-link installed at the factory.

3- After replacing the CR, CG, and CB boards, be sure to perform the G-2 adjustment
procedure beginning on page 3.

4- Use the service mode to reset the error code counter memory as follows:

a. Turn the TV off.

b. Set the remote control to TV mode by pressing the "TV ANT" button.

c. Enter the self-diagnosis mode by pressing the following buttons in the order
shown: "DISPLAY" "5" "VOL --" "TV" power button.
Note that the above button sequence uses the volume down button, which is
different from the sequence for entering the normal service mode which uses
the volume up button.

d. Verify that the self-diagnosis window is displayed. If it is not, start over
again from step a. The self-diagnosis window looks similar to this:

SELF CHECK
2:+B OCP xx
3 +B OVP xx
4:V STOP xx
5:AKB xx
6:H STOP xx
7:HV xx
8:AUDIO xx
9:WDT xx

e. With the self-diagnosis window being displayed press the "8" button and
then press the "ENTER" button.

f. Turn the TV off to exit the self-diagnosis mode.

G2 Adjustment Procedure

IMPORTANT: The room must be as dark as possible when making the following adjustments.

1- Prepare the G-2 adjustment jig shown on page 5 of this bulletin. This jig requires three alligator
clips, two 6.8K/3 watt resistors, and three 2.2K/3 watt resistor. Use different colors for the alligator
clips to make identification easier.

CAUTION! The following procedure involves handling test leads with voltages as high as
210Vdc. Appropriate care should be exercised.

2- Turn on the set and allow it to warm up for at least 15 minutes with a picture on the screen.

3- Remove the front panel.
A. Remove the left and right side speaker grills.
B. Remove the bolts on both sides of the front panel.
C. Protect the toe rail from scratches by placing a thin sheet of cardboard or paper between the
bottom of the front panel and the toe rail.
D. Lift the front panel slightly, then pull it straight out and set it on the floor just in front of the toe rail.
E. Unplug the three connectors from the front panel and move it out of the way.

4- Select a video input with no input signal, so that the screen is black.

5- Make sure that the remote control is in the normal TV control mode by pressing the "TV ANT"
button directly above the number "3" button on the remote control. (The LED near the top right
corner of the remote control lights red when buttons are pressed when it is in the normal TV control
mode, and it lights green when buttons are pressed when it is in the DTV control mode).

6- Put the set into the service mode (with the TV power OFF press the following buttons in the order
shown: "DISPLAY" "5" "VOLUME +" "POWER").

7- Select category "MCP1", adjustment item "P ON", then press the "6" button on the remote control to
turn off the on-screen displays (the screen should be all black now).

8- Cover the lenses of the green and blue CRTs.

9- Attach the jig's alligator clip that is soldered to the free end of the last 6.8K resistor to the ground on
the CG board. The fast-on terminal where the black ground wires connect to on the CG board is a
convenient place to connect the alligator clip.

10- Attach the jig's alligator clip that is soldered to the free end of the first 2.2K resistor to the 210 volt
test point on the CG board. This test point is a jumper wire labeled "JW7211" which is mounted
over a small hole in the left-front corner of the CG board.

11- Attach the jig's alligator clip that is connected to the junction of the first 2.2K resistor and the second
2.2K resistor to KR TP7103 on the CR board (this is a pin that is located near the front-left corner of
the board).

12- Confirm that the voltage at TP7103 is 175 - 180 Vdc.

13- Turn the red G2 control on the focus pack clockwise until you can see some red retrace lines.

14- Turn the red G2 control counterclockwise to the point where the picture is just barely cut off (the
retrace lines just disappear and there is no red tint to the screen).

15- Cover the lenses of the red and blue CRTs.

16- Move the alligator clip from KR TP7103 on the CR board to the KG TP7203 on the CG board (this is
a pin that is located near the front-left corner of the board). Leave the other 2 alligator clips
attached to CG board.

17- Confirm that the voltage at TP7203 is 175 - 180 Vdc.

18- Turn the green G2 control on the focus pack clockwise until you can see some green retrace lines.

19- Turn the green G2 control counterclockwise to the point where the picture is just barely cut off (the
retrace lines just disappear and there is no green tint to the screen).

20- Cover the lenses of the red and green CRTs.

21- Move the alligator clip from KG TP7203 on the CG board to the KB TP7303 on the CB board (this is
a pin that is located near the front-left corner of the board). Leave the other 2 alligator clips
attached to CG board.

22- Confirm that the voltage at TP7303 is 175 - 180 Vdc.

23- Turn the blue G2 control on the focus pack clockwise until you can see some blue retrace lines.

24- Turn the blue G2 control counterclockwise to the point where the picture is just barely cut off (the
retrace lines just disappear and there is no blue tint to the screen).

25- Remove the jig's alligator clips from the boards.

26- Turn off the set's power, then turn it on again (this cancels the service mode).

27- Select a video input or tuner that has a video signal present.

28- Verify that the black levels and white balance are correct and that the picture quality is good. The
convergence may appear to be out of adjustment at this point. If so, press the autofocus button on
the set to see if the convergence comes back in. Additional adjustment may not be necessary.

29- Secure the G2 adjustment controls on the focus pack with locking paint; do not to allow the paint to
seep inside of the controls.

30- Re-install the front panel and speaker grills. Be sure to connect the three white connectors to the
front panel before putting it back in place.

This completes the G2 adjustment.
